About Stainless steel

- What kind of stainless steel do you use?

All 4evaeco products are made with 18-8 stainless steel which is high quality food grade stainless steel. The term ‘18-8’ is referring to the 18% chromium, 8% nickel alloy mixture of the steel.

When more than 10.5% of chromium is added, a very thin oxide film called ‘passive layer’ is formed and prevent stainless steel from corrosion. Even if it is damaged, this passive layer develops on the surface slowly as the chromium reacts with oxygen in the air and heals itself naturally. It then stops further corrosion. Therefore, 18-8 stainless steel is resistant to corrosion and durable.

- How do I maintain stainless steel?

Stainless steel is very easy to clean compared to many other materials.
The best way of cleaning is soak it in hot water with mild dishwashing detergent for a little bit, gently scrub with soft or non-abrasive sponge, then rinse and dry completely with a soft towel before storing.
You can use a dishwasher if you prefer.

- Is stainless steel rust proof?

Stainless steel is resistant to corrosion, but when the passive layer is damaged or removed by physical abrasion (brushing, grinding, scraping) or by chemical reactions and this damage happens faster than the passive layer can heal itself naturally, it will rust.

To avoid damaging the surface of the stainless steel, do not use steel wool or wire brushes. Avoid the use of chlorinated or abrasive cleansers, and other harsh chemicals containing alcohol, ammonia or mineral spirits.

If stainless steel is in contact with rustable metals, there is a risk of corrosion. For example, with an iron pan, iron knives, steel wool or an iron scrubbing brush that is rusting, stainless steel will be contaminated and may rust.

If stainless steel and aluminum are used together, there should be little risk of corrosion.

- If the stainless steel products has rust, how can I remove it?

For small rust spots, mix one tablespoon of baking soda and two cups of water and rub the paste on the spot in the direction of the grain with a soft, clean cloth or sponge. Rinse and wipe the area clean with the wet towel.

If this doesn’t work, fill a spray bottle with vinegar and spray an even coat on the area. Wait five minutes and wipe with a dump sponge follow with a rinse and dry.

If the rust is stubborn, cover the area with baking soda and spray vinegar over it until the mixture starts to fizz and bubble. Once it dies down, scrub with a damp sponge and rinse.

You can also use lemon juice instead of vinegar. Mix equal amount of lemon juice and baking soda to form a paste, let it sit for 15-30 minutes, then scrub away, rinse and dry.
However, vinegar and lemon juice have strong acidity. Don’t use them more than you need or soak for long hours as you might damage the passive layer.

- Can I use stainless steel containers in the oven?

Yes, they are safe for oven.
To ensure the longevity of the products, wash thoroughly after each use.

Make sure all the crusted or built up food and greasy residue are removed completely.
If the surface has burn marks, sprinkle good amount of baking soda and rub with a dry sponge. Then, spray vinegar, scrub the area and wash it all off. With the proper care, they will shine on.
